Leading Through Silence

Posted by Rebecca Shigley Share Your Voice

As I was being verbally assaulted by a member of the gym this week, I had many thoughts running through my head. First thought … is this really happening?? I have never been talked to this way before, especially over something that I had no control over. Am I going to get hit? Do I know how to get in a fight? Then, the thoughts shifted. As I tried to objectively listen to the member, I realized that the most important thing I could do is to remain silent. And for me, this does not come naturally. She wanted me to get upset and say something nasty. She wanted to make an example out of me. However, I said nothing but, “I understand.” I know that this is not a new concept, however, in the heat of the moment - it was a new concept fo rme. After the the dust settled maybe, just maybe, she walked away with a little question in her head … asking herself if she handled the situation correctly. I, however, am at peace knowing that silence was the best way to learn, listen, and lead.
