Arts and Awesomeness - Lessons from Burning Man

Medium What does Burning Man, the Nevada Annual Arts Festival, have to teach us about creating awesomeness?

Fast Company published a recent article, Leadership Lessons from Burning Man, that is worth the read. Burning Man is a 25 year old festival that occurs every year the week before Labor Day and might appear to some as a "hippie love fest in the middle of the Nevada desert".

After attending Burning Man this year, Boyd suggests this is more of an enterprise than an event that can teach us a lot about inspiring creative people and creating great results.   "How?",  you might ask.   Four simple, yet not easy strategies:

  • Start with culture
  • Add a dose of trust and positive re-enforcement
  • Motivate with autonomy
  • Reward people with appreciation rather than money
The cool thing is the lessons that are being realized in the middle of the Nevada desert are the same ones author Dan Pink writes about in his book Drive that uses 50 years of behavioral science to overturn the conventional wisdom of human motivation.

Small Kelly Lewis Hello! Here are a few things that I have found support me in creating the life I want, keeping myself in check, and leading with courage and compassion: a slow walk with my hubby and our pups, my work, honesty with myself, the smile of another, and mother nature.
